Ahh the end of the August, a time where the farmer’s markets are busting with some of summers finest produce, the kids are getting ready to be back to school (or are already) and everyone is getting ready for the unofficial end of summer during Labor Day weekend.
This was a weird summer though, I thought for sure we’d be brutally attacked by the heat after an awful winter but it seems mother nature decided to be nice and spare us through August. Instead of sweaty days and running the air conditioner non-stop, I’m walking outside with a cool breeze and noticing the leaves are already changing. It’s a bit of an unsettling site, even for someone who loves fall. Does this mean all the pumpkin things will start to appear soon?
I’m just not ready for that yet. Summer doesn’t actually end until September 22nd, so until then I’m going to continue with my summer eats.
In my very humble opinion, they best way to do that is to mix up a little cocktail with those peaches you couldn’t resist from the farmers market.
You know what I’m talking about, they practically call your name as you walk by each farm stand with them piled high in their sweet and juicy glory. If you are going to have a peach, this is the time to do it. Then after you’ve eaten your share, make this bourbon smash. You do need a drink for any Labor Day festivities after all.
Forget the cream, it’s the peaches and bourbon that belong together.
Ingredients
- 1/2 ripe peach, diced
- juice from 1/2 lemon
- 1 ounce simple syrup
- 8-10 basil leaves, plus extra for garnish
- 2 ounces bourbon
- crushed ice
Instructions
- In an old fashioned glass muddle the peach, lemon juice, simple syrup and basil leaves.
- Pour in the bourbon, stir and fill the glass to the top with crushed ice.
- Garnish with basil.
- Makes 1 cocktail.

You had me at bourbon. Dang this looks good! Do I *have* to wait until 5:00 to make one 😉
Mmmmmm, I’ll take one, please!
Ummmmm yes. I need this cocktail immediately!
Oh my YES!!
Oh my goodness, I would love this right now!
Oh, yes!! That’s exactly what those peaches do, they simply scream “pick me! Pick me!” don’t they?? And I can’t begin to tell you how much I’m in need of a break with this cocktail. Cheers! It’s 5:00 somewhere… right?
You’re right I couldn’t resist those peaches from the farmer’s market and now I have a whole case of them! What to do… 😉
Love that you added fresh basil to this drink!
A total winner!! We’ll have guests this weekend and I’ve been looking around for new, simple, clean cocktail recipes — I think I found The One!! I have a ton of basil I need to harvest, too. Perfect 🙂
Color me intrigued! I’d like to try one (or two) of these right now!
Ermagawd, I have every single ingredient at home EXCEPT FOR THE PEACHES! I don’t know why I’m shouting! Do I have time to run by the market to pick some up on my way home from work? The obvious answer is hells yeah! I love this drink, Susan, and the photos are gorgeous.
You are the bourbon queen, my friend! Keep the summer recipes coming. I am not ready for pumpkin.
I just won a create of peaches…I think a good number of them might be made into these!
Oh wow! Peached with Bourbon? I’m so there.
This drink looks incredible! I love peaches with bourbon….they were made for each other IMO.
