Did you ever get in the kitchen and cook with your mom or dad as a kid? I used to hang around the kitchen, but as soon as my mom would break out the butter, sugar, flour and eggs I would appear right by her side. Some things really never change, as much as I love cooking savory food, desserts are still my favorite thing to make.
Today #SundaySupper along with American Family Insurance is taking a trip down memory lane and cooking up some of our favorite childhood meals. American Family Insurance is also hosting a fun sweepstakes to share your favorite recipe, keep on reading after the recipe for more information.
Coming up with a favorite family recipe provide to be more than a challenge than I expected it to be! I decided the best time to question my mom was at Rosh Hashanah dinner last week, the entire family would be gathered together and someone was bound to come up with something good. My mom is a wonderful cook, she went through phases of trying out different cuisines, but also had her staples that we lovingly enjoyed. Here is the thing about her recipes, they are brown. Chicken marsala, skirt steak, marinaded flank steak, meatballs, meatloaf, all delicious but brown! I joked with my family that they should have prepared for a future food blogger in the family and cooked more colorful meals.
So instead we turned to desserts, this was an area that I at least stepped in and helped out with. I lovingly made – and ate – chocolate chip cookies with my mom and her cheesecake is practically famous but it still wasn’t clicking with me. Then one brother hit the mark, moms coffee cake, filled with chocolate, walnuts, cinnamon and sugar and topped with more walnuts and sugar. Can you smell the cake now? Are you imagining the moist and tender crumb? There is no better coffee cake than this one and we hadn’t enjoyed it in years. The reason why? Mom misplaced the recipe! We recalled as much as could and I’m happy to say I think I came up with a pretty good replica.
I only wish my mom didn’t fly back down to Florida and we were able to experiment together. Baking is the best and most fun way to introduce your youngest family members into the kitchen. All the mixing and the the promise of a batter covered spoon to lick will make anyone excited to get their hands dirty.

I am not a big dessert person but the one exception is coffee cake… I can smell this one all the way over here. I love that this family recipe was a team effort!
Susan, this looks amazing. Pinned it to make for MY mom! And I am cracking up about non-photogenetic family favorites. Mine looks like a plate of slop, but it tastes wonderful!

My parents made a whole lot of brown food too and, yes, it is quite a challenge for taking food photos. It ain’t pretty but it tastes so good! Anyway, one of my favorite cakes that my mom would bake was a sour cream pound cake. I’ll have to bake this coffee cake for her because I know she would love the added chocolate, cinnamon, and walnuts.
My mom didn’t make awesome desserts like this! #Jealous

You just made me go turn on the oven.
Hey, sometimes brown is perfectly okay! Especially when it is something like a lovely coffee cake 🙂
Well, I told them brown desserts are somehow easier to photograph, mostly because I can manhandle it style-wise. 🙂
I just love a sour cream coffee cake…and one with a chocolate layer must be amazing! So glad you were able to recreate this 🙂
We ate alot of brown foods too now that I think of it. lol Your moms and your adaptation sounds completely scrumptious. What is not to love about cake, sugar, and nuts? Yumm-o!
Funny how brown savory food is impossible to photograph, yet brown desserts are a piece of cake (pun intended 😉 ) I wish I had a piece of this coffee cake for breakfast!

I love brown-colored foods! 🙂 Soups are also challenging subjects to photograph.
Your coffee cake is a thing of perfection. I could eat a slice of this every morning with a nice cup o’ joe.
This is about the most beautiful brown food I’ve ever seen 🙂 I don’t think any family could have prepared for a future food blogger. haha.
Susan,
Love this sour cream coffee bundt bake! and your mom sounds fabulous! Who cares about the brown food if she’s cooking different cuisines! That is so awesome! and I totally agree! Baking is the best and most fun way to introduce your youngest family members into the kitchen. Love this!

Mm could you send me a piece for breakfast. Seriously this looks perfect.
Your mom sounds amazing 🙂 AS DOES THIS COFFEE CAKE! I seriously can smell it, mmmmm
Chocolate, walnuts, cinnamon, and sugar?! I think I need some of this right now!
What great memories you have, Susan. I didn’t help my mom too much in the kitchen (she always shooed us out of the room cause we got in the way. Case in point – one time she was baking a cake and the phone rang. As she was talking on the phone in the other room, I poured all the batter out onto the kitchen table so that I could make squiggly designs with it. I was pretty young but boy, was she mad!). There’s little I love more in the world that a sour cream coffee cake. This looks awesome, girl!
I have a total weakness for sour cream coffee cakes (just made one a few days ago). If we must have brown food, this would be the way to do it! 🙂
