Bacon Kettle Corn #SundaySupper

Are you excited for Puppy Bowl  Super Bowl Sunday? Oh, who am I kidding with that cross out, most people look forward to a big Super Bowl party, I look forward to watching puppies bounce around the TV screen for an hour.

Did you know that next to Thanksgiving, the Super Bowl is the next largest food consuming day? I guess it makes sense between all the people who watch the game, and then the people who just get dragged along.  You gotta eat right?

#SundaySupper has you covered today and yes I realize today is the big day, but for those of you not so organized we have you covered.  Especially with this recipe, bacon kettle corn can be made in 20 minutes.  Perfect when you realize you might run out of snacks by halftime.  A little sweet, a little salty, makes everybody happy! Plus, you know, pork fat. 🙂

Now for a brief moment, can we go back to discussing puppy bowl? As you can guess, I’m not a big football fan, I can’t remember the last time I actually watched the Super Bowl.  However, I have one gripe with the puppy bowl organizers.  Why no pugs? Yet again, no pugs in your lineup.  Do you have something against this face?

Sir P. puppy

Or use a grown up pug. They basically look like puppies and drag their butts on the floor when they run. 🙂

Ingredients

  • 4 slices thick cut bacon, cut into 1/2 inch pieces
  • reserved bacon fat
  • 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
  • 1/4 cup white granulated sugar
  • kosher salt to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large stainless steel pot with a cover, cook the bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove with a slotted spoon and leave the bacon fat in the pot.
  2. To test if the fat is hot enough, place 1-2 kernels of corn in the pot and cover. If they pot in about a minute, you are good to go.
  3. Pour the popcorn kernels and sugar in the bottom of the pot, cover and carefully lift off the heat and aggressively shake together.
  4. Place the pot back on the heat and every 10 seconds or so give the pot an aggressive shake. Every now and then, lift off the heat to shake.
  5. After a minute the kernels should start to pop.
  6. Continue to shake and about 2 minutes after the kernels start to pop, everything should be done. Make sure to listen to gauge when to turn off the heat.
  7. Immediately transfer your popcorn to a large serving bowl, toss with the bacon and if you like season with some kosher salt.

Bacon in the popcorn? Why, yes, please. We only have one TV in the house so I couldn’t very well tell Brian he couldn’t watch the game. I pretended to care while wondering what the Puppy Bowl organizers have against beautiful little Cavaliers, too!

lol – the look on your pug’s face just slays me. What a cutie! A good friend of mine used to have two pugs, they were sweet boys. Always smiling. Now that I’ve got a puppy, I’m so fascinated by other people’s dogs and anything dog-related. What is this puppy bowl you speak of? As for this bacon kettle corn – hells to the yeah! It looks freaking fantastic! Wish I had a bowl of it right now (because bacon always = breakfast).
