Add a splash of something tart and sweet to your next old fashioned. Strawberry Rhubarb Shrub Old Fashioned is a fun twist on the classic cocktail that even Don Draper couldn’t refuse.
It’s been a busy week and I can’t believe it’s Friday already!
Monday kicked off bright and early with a community forum full of women entrepreneurs hosted by Small Business Services of NYC. They are kicking off a new initiative called #womeNYC and met with women all over the 5 boroughs to speak with us and our needs and to figure out how they can help. I’m excited for the full launch of the program in the fall, plus I learned how much free programming I wasn’t taking advantage of to help grow my business. There’s a wealth of classes and advisors out there, I already signed up for my first session next week. I mean, my tax dollars are paying for it, I’m going to take advantage of every single opportunity!
Watch out because this Bake Shop is going to grow and I might get annoying about it but that’s because I want you to buy these awesome cookies.
Tuesday night was spent with Bob’s Red Mill at Flour + Heart: A Celebration of America’s Best Bakers. My dinner comprised of incredible pastries, baked goods and cocktail pairings from bakers around the country. Once in awhile, you just have to let traditional convention out the window and treat yourself to a weird dinner. It was worth it, plus I met Bob. Yes, THE Bob. It was fun, he’s fun and he’s exactly as you picture him on the package.
It’s been a ramp festival in my kitchen this week too. I might have purchased one too many bunches at the farmer’s market last weekend. I can’t help it. Ramps you guys, I love them, they come around for a few weeks and then you have to wait an entire year until you taste them again.
Let’s talk cocktails – with the end of Mad Men on Sunday, I just had to do an old fashioned in honor of Don Draper but with a little twist. Do I think Don would drink this today? I don’t know but then again, I don’t think Don would really turn down any bourbon cocktail. I do think Peggy would be all over an old fashioned with a splash of shrub tossed in.
Shrubs have been gaining in popularity the last few years and I had my own mix from a kickstarter I supported last year. Still unopened. It’s strawberry rhubarb season and it was the perfect excuse to mix it up with some bourbon. You get a little vinegar tang with a touch of sweetness that just works nicely with the bourbon.
Shrubs can be made easily enough at home but be prepared to give yourself a couple of weeks to let them do their magic or just pick up a bottle if you see one out and about.
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon superfine sugar or 1 sugar cube
- 2-3 dashes aromatic or angostura bitters
- 1/2 ounce strawberry rhubarb shrub
- 2 ounces bourbon
- ice
- organge twist and strawberry for garnish
Instructions
- In an old fashioned glass add the sugar and bitters. Stir with a bar spoon to star to dissolve then add the shrub.
- Add your ice to the glass and then the bourbon. Stir again until the glass is chilled
- Twist the orange rind and wipe the rim of the glass then drop inside with the strawberry.
- Makes 1 cocktail.
