If you love your sweet pup as much as I love mine then give them these easy to make homemade treats of Sweet Potato Banana Dog Biscuits. They’ll love them so much, they might just let you sleep in Saturday morning!
Oh you guys, I have been a bad dog momma. I just let Sir Pugsley’s birthday come and go with just a whisper of a celebration last month.
Stop it, I’m not crazy, it’s not like I throw a dog party with the neighborhood pooches but I like to do something special for the little guy. After all, he brings such joy into my life, so why can’t I do a little something extra that makes him dance.
For real, treats make him get up on his hind legs and do a little boogie dance. It’s rather hysterical and probably something we should have trained out of him as a puppy but he’s a pug. . . a dog that is motivated but one thing – food (and snuggles but mostly food).
In all seriousness though, you can’t do better for your dog than homemade treats.
For months I spent a ton of money on those organic jerky treats to only find out the meat still came from overseas. It’s not really something I want to feed my dog. While most of the time he gets just fruit and vegetables during the day every few months he does get something special.
The sweet potato is great for your dogs digestive system and they contain amino acids to increase the bodies antioxidant activity. Plus the banana is high in potassium to to help your pups muscles stay strong! Secretly these treats are health bombs!
Now they do contain grain, which for some pups can upset their stomach and I’m working on a grain-free version that I hope to share with you too but the little dude seems to fine with the small amount of flour he gets every few days from having a treat. The key is to know what is best for your dog. Switching out the all the whole wheat flour with ground oats should work find, as it’s mostly a way to bind everything together. Plus the oats add protein and soluble fiber.
Enough of the health talk though, let’s get to treat making, your doggie is waiting!
- 1 1/2 cups organic whole wheat flour (plus extra for your work surface)
- 1/4 cup whole oats
- 1 ripe banana
- 1 large sweet potato, baked
- 1 large egg
- Scoop the flesh from your baked sweet potato and it to a large bowl with the banana. Mash it together using a potato masher or fork and add the flour, oats and egg.
- Mix until it comes together and scoop out onto a well floured work surface.
- Knead the dough until it's no longer sticky with the flour on your surface and pat into a 1/4 inch thick square.
- Using a sharp knife cut the treats into small pieces or use your favorite cookie cutter to press the treats out.
- You may need to add more flour as your work because the treat dough is very sticky.
- Transfer the cut out treats to a parchment lined baking sheet and heat your oven to 300 degrees F.
- Bake the treats for 45 minutes to 1 hour and then let them stay in the turned off oven to completely cool and dry out for an additional hour.
- The treats are more chewy than crispy and if you want a crunchier treat, bake them for slightly longer.
- Store treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freeze to keep fresh.
I’m sending Momma over to see these treats. She makes all of the beagles’ treats, because she’s terrified of the China treat thing, since she lost our old cat from kidney failure when the first China pet food thing came out years ago. Plus, she gets lots of help from the two beagles in the kitchen. Her sous chefs are great help, so they deserve a treat, you know. I love Sir Pugsley! He’s adorable. Happy birthday, Sir Pugsley!
I must try this treat recipe soon for our dogs! We had pugs in the past, and they are most definitely motivated by food!

I am totally paranoid about checking where all of Abby’s food and treats come from. It has to be made/grown/raised in Canada and the US. I swear, she eats better than me ‘n Tony! These are perfect! I make sweet potato snaps for them (totally my name) where you just slice the sweet potato and then slow-bake them for 3 hours so they are crispy. Emmy and Steinbeck adore them. They will love these! I’m making them this weekend. 🙂

I think Sir Pugsley would love them. I peel them, then slice them on the mandoline, using the thickest slice. Put them on a low oven (225), and after an hour and a half, flip them over (I put them on parchment paper), then another hour and a half. I’ll then turn the oven off and leave them for awhile, which allows them to crisp up. I store them in the refrigerator, just to be safe. It’s what they get when I leave the house for a good bye treat. Yeah, they are spoiled, and I don’t care. 😉
I love that you give them a goodbye treat when you leave too. Sir Pugsley expects it from us, usually a carrot but he’s upset if we don’t give him something. I’m definitely going to give it a go and I store all his treats in the fridge too. I don’t want to chance them going moldy on me!

Hi Rachel – it’s been awhile since I’ve made these but don’t feel like you are doing something wrong. It’s hard to mess them up. Just use enough flour so that you can pat the dough out and cut out the shapes. A bench scraper will be helpful if you have one during this process. The center of the dough is still going to be sticky. It will have a biscuit/scone texture to it, which is why it takes a bit of extra dough to kneed it in. Also why they really need to bake for awhile and cool completely (also store in the fridge so they don’t go bad on you if you keep for awhile). Good luck!
Hi Susan, this recipe sounds delicious. The banana is a great idea. We’re considering trying this for our twelve-year-old dalmatian who deserves a little reward every now and then. Our only problem is that he has an extremely sensitive digestive system and cannot digest whole grains. Have you tried replacing the oats with rice (puffed rice, flour etc.)?
Hi Jesse – I totally understand the gut issues with your pup. Since the oats and flour are really just a binder I don’t see why there would be an issue replacing it with rice flour. You may have to adjust the amounts a bit, as the dough is quite sticky to begin with but it should work just fine!
How long do this cookies keep?
I always keep them in the refrigerator and they’ll be good for about a month. You could also freeze them for 3 months.
