The Real Truth About Owning A Dog #ScienceHappens

Sir Pugsley Resting #ScienceHappens - Girl In The Little Red Kitchen

If you know me at all, you know that I love my dog.  I’m talking really, absolutely, love my dog.  At some point in our conversation together his name would be brought up numerous times and at least 1 or 2 recent photos will be shown.  He’s just that cute, look at him!

I can’t help it, we’ve been blessed with an incredibly low-maintenance, cuddly little fuzzy pug who requires the human touch as much as he can get it, all the carrots, apples, bananas and turkey in the house and a soft pillow to sleep on.  The fact of the matter is it took a good 6 months of his life with us to get to that point though.

Here’s the truth about owning a dog – 99% of the time they will be your best snuggle buddy but 1% of time they have oopsies that tend to rhyme with poo… yeah you get it and that’s a warning.

Sir Pugsley came home with us at 5 months old and it was a challenging puppy time for us. First time dog owner for me and first time owning a dog on his own for Braden. It was a learning curve about how to crate, how to keep the apartment puppy safe and how to train. I wish I had Royal Canin as a source 4 years ago, they have everything you need to know about growth and development for your pup.

The first thing we noticed was this guy liked to eat everything in sight. I knew pugs were motived by food but neon pink ear plugs? Really pugsley?  How do you discover that your dog has consumed those?  It looks the same on the way out.

Then there is what we eventually affectionally dubbed diarrhea Wednesday for about 3 weeks in a row this poor dude would come running out of the crate to poo everywhere.  On the floor, on the carpet, in the hall, in the elevator, on Braden.  It was a mess but owning a dog comes with messes.  Turns out that habit of eating everything resulted in a parasite in his puppy belly – off to the vet we went!

Oh and don’t count on keeping nice rugs around – we also had the pleasure of the defiant ‘I will stand in this hallway, stare at you and lift my leg in this spot moment’. Did I mention pugs are very emotional dogs?  He clearly was letting off some sort of steam.

Speaking of emotion – this dog was not happy about our travel schedule 2 summers ago and proceeded to pay us back by doing his business in the house. Not cool pugsley! Of course we were concerned but the vet said it’s because we changed his schedule so much it was his way of letting us know. I’d honestly prefer it be a different way but again the pug emotions.

I am so grateful that’s all behind us now, except for his tissue eating habit. I can’t explain that one but with a healthy diet and lots of love this guy has steered clear of any more upset stomach issues (except for the gas – watch out he’ll clear a room)!  An emergency vet visit is never any fun but when your dog is your child, their health is your top priority.

This is why science is the best way to look at every issue your dog may have. For more pet health nutrition information, go to http://www.mypetreference.com/#!search/ask+the+vet

Ah, what a cutie. I am so glad that his stomach issues are under control. Our pets do bring us great joy. We miss our dog, Anne, every day. Some day we will get another pup to spoil and fuss over. Have a great week!

What a cutie!!! I had Black Pug that I named Sir Killer Aaron (Aaron is my last name). I lost him 10 years ago and there isn’t a day go by that I still don’t miss him. I have a funny story to tell you about him. One day a Church Lady (that I didn’t know) came to the house and Sir Killer started barking, so I was saying Killer, Killer (to make him stop barking), well this lady took off like a rocket and I didn’t know why. About 5 minutes later someone knocked on my door & there were 5 Policemen standing there – what a shock!! Of course Sir Killer started barking again so I did the same thing as before saying Killer, Killer. The Policemen asked me what his name was and I told them that it was Sir Killer, they all started laughing so hard they had tears in their eyes. When they finally stopped laughing they told me that a lady was at my door earlier and that I told Sir Killer to kill her, kill her. This lady was sitting in her car down the street waiting for the Police to arrest me, so they had to decide which one of them was going to go and talk to her and try to explain what the dogs name was and that Sir Killer wasn’t going to kill her. I will never forget that story as long as I live. I hope you don’t mind me sharing this story, it is just one of the wonderful memories I have of my precious baby.

Thank you so much for sharing your story Connie! I was grinning the entire time I read it! Sir Killer sounded like a hoot! I had to retell it to my husband last night and he found it hilarious also. I love pugs, they bring such joy every single day and they are precious.

I cannot tell you how adorable I think he is. The only pugs I knew were at my first job and I spoiled them. I never had the pleasure of discovering their emotional side or all the fun that comes with it. 🙂 They are super fun. And the pugs I knew were very affectionate. I love me some puggy hugs!

Such a little cutie! I don’t know if I could go through all of that though, seriously. We’ve been talking about getting a dog… but if it’s going to chew up a bunch of stuff and do its business on our carpets… we may have to think some more!

Thanks Lori! Yes a lot of thought goes into owning a dog but it’s absolutely rewarding in the end. He actually didn’t destroy too many things (no shoe or furniture chewing, thank goodness)! Even during the worst training days, I’m was still grateful he’s a part of our lives.

Gaaaaaaah I love his adorable little face! I was laughing and nodding along as I read this post, Susan. I can totally relate. Tony ‘n I are first time pet owners and damn, it was a steep learning curve. Ahhhh, those days of coming home to find that the entire place was full of pee ‘n poo. Abby loves eating Tony’s wax ear plugs (we smartened up and always keep them in a container now) and she is constantly sneaking around eating kleenex and toilet paper. No matter what these little dudes/dudettes do, we can’t stay mad at them, right? Look at their sweet faces!

So what is with dogs and their need to eat paper? He also used to eat the menus that got slipped under our door but that stopped. Oh a music book or two was also destroyed in the process. OH! I should have wrote about the time he ate not only Braden’s glasses but mine. Man I’m glad he doesn’t chew on things anymore.
