Guess who’s back for a special appearance today? It’s the one time a year where my furry pal, my little space heater and vacuum cleaner gets the spotlight.  It’s Sir Pugsley’s birthday and that means a new treat recipe is in order!

In the last year we’ve really cut out a lot of store bought treats for the dog; from recalls on dog jerky (trust me, I wasn’t thrilled that my organic brand still sourced their meat from China) and being more sensitive to what ingredients go into what foods. The pugsters treats have moved on to fruits, vegetables and the ones I make for him.

From the beginning we always gave him carrots, as soon as he hears me peeling something in the kitchen – doesn’t matter what he comes running. He assumes it’s a carrot and it’s for him.  Soon after that we moved on to apples. Now we can’t eat an apple in front of him, he will get up in your face until you give him a piece.  The joys of having a small dog.

Then one day, Braden was getting his breakfast ready and had a banana on the coffee table.  Sir Pugsley never had any interest in it and it was still in its peel. Well lo and behold the dude grabbed on to that banana and had it dangling from his mouth! The little rascal, so we looked up to see if it was okay treat for dogs and bananas were added to the rotation.  Guess what can’t be eaten in front of him now either? Yeah you guessed it.

My dog is pretty well behaved, he usually sits when you ask him to. Sometimes he will come when you call his name. Laying down happens when he knows a treat is coming is way.  But food, food is another story. This dog has no self control.  This is the look on his face because I took too long to give him a treat.

Sir Pugsley

This is the disaster that happened after I attempted a cute photo-op with the pug and his new treats.  If you can’t tell, he really likes them.

He wouldn’t even look at me to let me take a photo. He just.kept.eating. He actually stuck his head in the jar before I could take it away. I don’t even know how many treats he got, but it’s his birthday right? He deserves a little something for putting up with me sticking a hat on him every year.  At least I have the benefit of knowing these treats are made with whole ingredients, no preservatives and love. 🙂

Happy Birthday Sir Pugsley!

Thanks Christie! It honestly takes no time to make them, maybe an hour total and I’m kind of ashamed of the fact that I don’t do it more often.

They don’t haunt you for treats during the day? Sir Pugsley expects lunch at noon. He will be dead asleep but at 12 wakes up and starts bugging one of us for something to eat.

Let me tell you – if you made these treats for the JuniorSousPug – he’d leave Philly in a heartbeat and move to the big city! You bring up a good point. I now am a bit worried about his natural treats that I bought and where everything is sourced from. Jeffie does love all things Peanut Butter and just started to learn about bananas… perhaps if he’s done throwing his temper tantrum, I might have to make a batch or three of these 🙂

Susan, I love Sir Pugsley. He’s adorable and he’s got attitude. I’m hosting a party on Sunday to raise funds for the SPCA’s National Cupcake Day and Abby will have some of her furry friends in attendance. I’m going to make these doggy treats for them. Happy birthday to your handsome little guy! He deserves all the treats he wants today!

Sir Pugsley is one cute little pug dog. The sad face waiting for a treat picture made me smile. One of my friends has a pug – ol’ Oliver is a hoot. Love him and his chubby little belly (the dog, not my friend) My canine buddy Zeus is a black lab and true to his lab heritage, lives for treats. He is also very sensitive to many of the ingredients in normal food and treats. Chicken jerky made him quite ill. Did I mention Zeus is an expensive dog to maintain? Your recipe sounds like a perfect fit for us. I even have a bunch of rather ripe bananas on the counter. Think I will put them to good use – as soon as the women’s USA – Canada hockey game is over. USA! USA!

Your message made me smile Linda! Pugs are a hoot, the things they do blow my mind sometime but they are always a source of entertainment. I hope these treats keep your Zeus happy and healthy!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SIR PUGSLEY!!! Weezer says “Rufff!” I cannot even say the word peanut butter in our house because Weeze will go crazy and then I will have to give him peanut butter just to calm him down. I haven’t tried bananas with him yet… I will see how that goes.

AWE!!! Hadley HATES bananas but she can detect a peanut butter molecule in the next apartment. I’ve baked whole wheat and pb treats for her before and she’ll do just about anything for one. Happy birthday to your adorable little space heater.

Beso loves peanut butter AND bananas. He’ll eat a banana bite by bite from my hand so whenever I peel one, I have to share. I know he’d adore these. Happy birthday to your pup!

I keep forgetting to tell you that it’s two paws up from the beagles with these treats. They are now our go-to recipe for treats (I don’t buy treats anymore–only make them. I should be as good to myself with my food. haha). They stand at the door of the oven, waiting for them to come out. 🙂
