This blog has gone to the dogs, no really it has. Just for today, my little fella Sir Pugsley is taking over.
I think it’s appropriate that the little guy gets his spotlight on his birthday right? Now everyone with me say, HAPPY BIRTHDAY SIR PUGSLEY!
I figured after 4 years, perhaps it was time to finally make some homemade dog treats. I make so many human ones that he’s not allowed to have, for his special day (and yes I really do celebrate my dogs birthday – I love my dog too much), it was time he got to enjoy my baking too!
Being new the world of dog treats, I came across this fantastic recipe on King Arthur Flour’s website, I was honestly looking for a good wholesome base to include his favorite treats and occasional special something (apple, carrots and bacon)
Bacon? Bacon? Did someone say Bacon?
Let me tell you, the aroma of these treats were insane, between the bacon and the peanut butter my poor dog was circling round for an hour while they baked and cooled. I don’t think he’s ever been tortured this much!
While I used tiny cookie cutters for one bite sized treats for him, feel free to used the appropriate size for your dog.
Oh and I learned one major thing while taking these photos. DO NOT and I mean DO NOT photograph dog treats at dog level. When I was finally ready for him to have his bite, that pile sitting there. Gone. Also, not possible to get my dog to pose when treats are sitting in front of him.
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup rolled oats, quick or regular
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup natural peanut butter
- 1/4 cup shredded carrots
- 1/4 cup shredded apple
- 2 slices cooked bacon crumbled
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon bacon grease
- 1/4 cup water
- Pre-heat your oven to 300 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper
- In a medium bowl mix together the flour, oats and salt.
- Add the peanut butter, carrots, apple and crumbled bacon next, mix well.
- Finally, mix in the egg, bacon fat and one tablespoon at a time the water until the dough comes together ( you may not need the full 1/4 cup).
- Pat the dough out on a clean surface to 1/4 inch thick and punch out with your cookie cutter. Reroll the scraps until all the biscuits are formed.
- Place on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 40 minutes until golden brown and crisp, you want them to be completely dry.
- Store in an airtight container or jar.
