Montreal Eats, Pt. 1

As you can see from my previous post, I wasn’t kidding that I eat my way through my vacations.

We started bright and early our first full day in Montreal.  Some meals and restaurants were planned, while others were found on a whim.

The first stop, was a planned one.  DH needed to caffeinate, and he wanted to do so with some prime espresso.  Luckily one of the two cafes he wanted to go to was close to our hotel. I’m not a coffee drinker, but I was please to find a few hot chocolate options.  The first option on the menu, sipping chocolate.  Yes, please.  Probably the best hot chocolate I’ve had next to Jacques Torres.  Just picture the best dark chocolate you’ve had melted.

It also just happened to be served in a little red cup.  Do they know me or what?

After that we took a long stroll down from downtown Montreal to the old port.  Where I was happy to find my first food truck.

I think one of the best ways to taste a city is by their street food, it’s an inexpensive way to eat around a new city.  I however did learn from the vendor we spoke with that street food vending is illegal in Montreal.  She had a special permit to park by the docks and it was extremely hard to come by.

The cookies were delicious though, and a great treat after our long walk. Plus there just happened to be a man and his pug ahead of us in line.

After all that walking it was time to sit down for some Canadian beer and a little lunch – and no not Molson.

We headed back up to the downtown area to a bar that became our mini-homebase  during our stay, Benelux.  Benelux – is a nano brewery, brewing Belgian style beers served just at their bar.  At least I think so, I didn’t see it served any place else, nor in any bottles in stores.

On the left, I had their triple and on the right was their Saison.  They were offering a happy hour special, beer plus a euro-style hot dog for $11.  Perfect little lunch before what we knew was going to be a large dinner.

A few weeks before we left, I told DH that I wanted to have a least one really nice dinner in Montreal.  I gave him the choice, he said okay and I made the reservation.  Lucky for me, we got in.  Most foodies know, the place to eat in Montreal is Martin Picard’s restaurant Au Pied de Cochon a duck fat, pork ridden, seafood, fois gras haven.

Without a doubt, I knew we had to get the fois gras poutine.

Then came the difficult part, do I get duck in a can, happy pork chop, house-made boudin… oh the list goes on and on.  I eventually decided on the pork chop.

So good, so large (sorry for the blurry photo), so not enough room in my belly.  Pork chop you defeated me.

DH decided on the bison tartare, also very good, a bit more manageable on the food scale size – but neither of us could get through those extra servings of frites that came with it.
