BLAT Hot Dogs

It just dawned on me the other day that it’s now 14 years since I graduated college, which means it also marks 14 years living in the actual city of New York versus the suburbs.  Sometimes I get asked if I miss life out there at all and the truth is: not really.  I’ve always been a city person at heart; I like the comfort of having everything I need close by (or delivered to me!) and I really never liked driving all that much.  The only thing that I really ever miss is my own personal backyard space.  Of course, I have my big backyard of Prospect Park and I love it but I have the tinge of desire to fire up the grill every year as soon as the weather is warm enough.

Growing up, both of my parents manned our grill for nightly dinners and it was most definitely a workhorse during the warmer months when no one wanted to turn on the stove.  While my parents loved to cook and I enjoyed reaping the benefits of it, not every dinner was always a big masterpiece.  Sometimes it was as simple as tossing a couple of hot dogs on the grill, pairing it with coleslaw and calling it a day.

Back then, the fanciest thing anyone ever did with a hot dog was wrapping it in puff pastry or topping it with some chili.  These days I feel like the combinations you can come up with are endless.  In my opinion, hot dogs are just a vessel for toppings, and in turn make it into an easy and complete meal.

Since we are just about to hit summer it’s the perfect time to combine my favorite summer sandwich with my favorite cookout food.  You really haven’t lived until you sit down with a B.L.A.T. piled high with crispy bacon, fresh summer tomatoes, creamy avocado and crunchy, crisp lettuce.

For this take on the BLAT – I went ahead and took some Sugardale hot dogs and wrapped it up with bacon and cooked it until crisp.  What’s great is you can go ahead and cook these guys on the grill for some extra smoky flavor, and then pop them in the oven while you prep the lettuce and the tomatoes and avocado.

Did I mention that Sugardale Foods is family owned and has been around for almost 100 years? Since 1920, Sugardale Foods has been producing their products, namely hot dogs, bacon, pepperoni and ham, in the U.S.A. Their bacon is produced with a historic and secret blend of ingredients that has been carefully guarded for nearly 100 years.  I won’t even get started on all the varieties that are available between the bacon and the hot dogs! You’ve got thick cut, applewood, chicken franks and New York Brand Beef Franks.  There’s something for everyone out there!

Speaking of which, get to it and start cooking up these BLAT dogs for a crowd right now.  They are a guaranteed crowd pleaser.

My favorite is a good well done hamburger with grilled onions. I want grilled marks and charring on both. Toasted buns and crushed potato chips on top.

My favorite summertime cookout food is definitely the gourmet burgers my husband makes! He gets a special grind of meat from the butcher and stuffs them with all kinds of cheeses and seasoning! They’re amazing!
