While packing for my move two months ago, I came to the realization that I have a lot of unloved bottles of booze on my bar cart. They get purchased for a specific recipe or a cocktail, get used once or twice and put away to collect dust for months (or I’m ashamed to admit years on end).

The worst part is when I forget I have something, and then go out and buy another bottle. I won’t even admit to the amount of multiple bottles of rum and gin I have.

In general, moving gives a great excuse to purge unwanted items, but this is alcohol we are talking about and is it ever unwanted? In most cases it won’t go bad, I’m not prone to keep a bottle I’ve had for years and years but if it’s been there for a year or two it’s good. Is it at its peak taste? Maybe not but for mixing up a cocktail it will do the trick.

Which is why now that I’m moved and settled at home that I’m vowing to use what I have before I go buy more. Everything is organized and viewable on a pretty new bar cart, unlike at my old home and I have no excuse. It’s also a great reason to mix and match and add a splash of something to a drink you may not normally add a splash of something to.

I’ve had this Grapefruit Whiskey Sour on my list of cocktails to make for sometime now. At first glance it looks like your basic whiskey sour with the grapefruit in place of lemons or limes for the sour mix.

It makes for a wonderful winter to early spring cocktail, taking full use of all those gorgeous grapefruits studding your grocery store aisles right now. What makes this cocktail just a little bit more special is the addition of St. Germain or Elderflower liqueur.

The bright and fragrant floral flavor is a lovely compliment to the sweet but tart grapefruit and smoky bourbon.
