Do you love holiday music and movies? Do you wait in anticipation for the day after Thanksgiving to start listening to holiday music without the shame of turning it on “too early”? Is the Hallmark Channel, ABC Family and any other cable channel on 24/7 so you can catch all the Christmas movies? Is that you? Yeah, well it’s okay to admit it today because #SundaySupper is bringing back our love of music and movie inspired dishes with a holiday theme!
I do have a confession to make though, I am a Jew that loves Christmas music. I can’t help it, I just do. I know I’m not the only one. But you’re probably thinking right now, what do Gin and Tonic Cupcakes have to do with Christmas music or movies? Well. . . nothing but they do have to do with Adam Sandler’s Chanukah Song!
Tell your friend Veronica
It’s time to celebrate Chanukah
I hope I get a harmonicah
Oh this lovely, lovely Chanukah
So drink your gin and tonicah
What do gin and tonics have to do with Chanukah? Absolutely nothing but I can’t resist the opportunity to put booze in my desserts and it makes a fun holiday or new year (okay really year round) treat. Just remember this is for the adults only, there is gin in that frosting!
I remember when the Chanukah song was released, I must have been in high school and we were obsessed with it. Finally a fun Chanukah song for us and to this day, I still get a chuckle whenever I hear it.
Okay…
This is a song that uhh..
There’s a lot of Christmas songs out there and uhh..
not too many Chanukah songs.
So uhh..
I wrote a song for all those nice little Jewish kids who don’t get to hear
any Chanukah songs.
Here we go…
Cupcakes so good the pug tried to make a go for them, but we stopped him just in time!
Ingredients
- 2 1/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- zest from 1 lime
- 12 tablespoon unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1 1/4 cups granulated white sugar
- 3 large eggs, room temperature
- 1/4 cup lime juice (from 1 lime)
- 1/4 cup gin
- 1 cup tonic water
- 2 sticks unsalted butter, room temperature
- 4 cups confectioners sugar
- zest from 1 lime
- juice from 1/2 lime
- 2 tablespoon tonic water
- 2 tablespoon gin
Instructions
- Heat your oven to 350 degrees and line 2 12 cup cupcake pans with cupcake liners.
- In a medium bowl, combined the flour, baking powder, salt, baking soda and lime zest.
- In the bowl of your stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment cream the butter and sugar until light and airy about 2-3 minutes.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time until combined and scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl.
- Stir in the lime juice and gin.
- Mix in half the flour mixture, then the tonic and finally the remaining flour until thoroughly combined.
- Fill the cupcake liners 2/3 of the way full with the batter and bake for 18 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let cool completely before frosting.
- In the bowl of your stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, mix together the butter and confectioners sugar on low speed.
- Add the lime zest, juice, tonic water and gin. Slowly increase the speed until the frosting comes together and is nice and smooth.
- Bring the speed up to medium high and mix for 2-3 minutes or until the frosting is light and fluffy.
- Pipe the frosting or spread it on the cupcakes using an offset spatula.
- Makes 22 cupcakes

I thought you were going key lime. But I love this even more! And I am a Christian who loves the Chanukah Song! Perfect match.
Haha I’m totally a Jew who loves Christmas music too! And the Hanukkah song…thank you Adam Sandler!
My jaw dropped this morning when I saw these on Pinterest. Your photos are stunning, Susan. I love that your pug loves them. Gotta love Adam Sandler. Pinned.

Boozie cupcakes, yes please. 🙂
Ha ha!! I am so cracking up! I love Adam Sandler’s Chanukah Song! I haven’t heard it this year! What a great recipe and so creative!!
I don’t think you are alone at all, Susan! I have Jewish AND Muslim friends who put up Christmas trees as well. Pretty trees and fun songs should be for everyone, I think, but I love that you have a Hanukkah song as well.
Your cupcakes are gorgeous! One of my best friend’s drink of choice is gin and tonic and we regularly have gin tastings at his house. I need to make these for him!

Loving the pug photo bomb!!
There are two cocktails at the top of my list, one is a vodka martini and the other is a gin and tonic. I have to try these cupcakes and check out the flavor. I promise to keep them away from my hounds too.

Haha all I thought was drunken pug! Imagine him stumbling down the halls after licking the frosting. Anyway, I love your twist on this drink. Bars should start serving cupcakes like this 😉
Actually he did manage to get a tiny lick in but we grabbed him before any damage could be done! Braden ate that cupcake. 🙂
As someone who has a star of David on top of her xmas tree, I approve! The husband just told me to get my shiksa ass in the kitchen and make him cupcakes 😉
LOVE these!! You are so darn creative!!
Who doesn’t love Christmas music? We’re Muslim and are listening to Christmas tunes right now! I would totally want others participating if we had awesome things like good tunes and movies! Oh and your cupcakes – gorgeous as always!
These look sinful!! I loved that song growing up too, I still chuckle and smile when I hear it these days. You don’t need a holiday to put booze in your desserts, go for it! Love your little pug as he seriously considers going in! Happy Holidays!
I am not a huge drinker but these cupcakes sound like such fun. A must for all cocktail parties moving forward.
What a fun post with some amazing photos! Cheers to your cupcakes. Think I’ll have a double 🙂
Love this combination! it’s so creative! I bet it tastes great too! Happy Holidays Susan!
Thanks Martin. Happy holidays to you too!

This cracks me up. I know I’ve already told you, but I adore these pictures. The bright green with that aqua background is just stunning. Also, your pug looks hungry!!!
Thanks Courtney! I just got new backgrounds and I’m in love with them. Also my pug always looks hungry!
These look so pretty and zesty – and any cake with gin in the frosting is a winner for me!

I’ve been waiting to see this recipe ever since you posted the title. The Chanukah song will never stop making me laugh. I’m not much of a gin drinker, so I don’t know what kind to buy to make this. What kind do you like?
So I’m not actually much of a gin drinker either. It wasn’t until this recipe when I took a sip of the G&T I made for the photo and was like, huh okay I like gin now. I had a bottle of Martin Millers gin that was sent to me and used that. But I think Tanqueray would be perfect too (you are also more likely to find a small bottle of it).
Oh yes, I have seen those little bottles of Tanqueray around. Thanks Susan!

Hi Miss Susan,
I myself am not Jewish (I am a Catholic Christian), but man, do those cupcakes look good. My parents (I’m a 16 year old gal at this time of writing) are planning a Holiday open-house party sometime. I really like this recipe- does the alcohol (mostly) bake out of the cake (but still leaves the flavors there)? Just curious, since I and my family don’t want to get guests unknowingly wasted on cupcakes.
Honestly, I didn’t even know Adam Sandler had the song you took as inspiration as a hit single (If you take a closer look at the lyrics, It seems to be an irreverent take on a Christmas Carol, but subverts it and makes it seem like a Jewish Christmas Carol). I was born in 1999 (but I’m very knowledgeable in all things past pop-culture). I looked up the song that you mentioned in this post, and it originally came out in 1995. I think Sandler was an SNL cast member by then (The 90’s surely was his heyday in my opinion, he’s not as good or as funny as he used to be then.). My guess is, did you graduate high school in the mid-to-late 1990’s? Seems that way to me. I will graduate high school in 2017, but I have a bunch of Childhood friends who I know are Jewish or half-Jewish (two of them, who are twin boys named Dylan and Jesse are College Freshmen), and they still listen to Christmas music (and Dylan and Jesse and their parents and their younger sister Sam even helped decorate our tree a bunch of times in the past).
I know this comment is a bit lengthy, but I hope that you enjoy it.
Hi Flannery – Thank you for your sweet and kind comment. It’s been so long since I made these cupcakes I had to go back and peek at the recipe to answer your questions. Yes, pretty much the gin will bake off in the cupcakes, so you don’t have to worry about getting your guests wasted, however it is present in the frosting. It’s only 2 tablespoons, which is just an ounce and definitely not much when it’s spread amongst all the cupcakes. I honestly would not worry about anyone getting a little buzz and you can always leave it off if it is a concern.
Of course all us Jews like Christmas music. Most of it was written by Jews! It may be May but I’m going to make these gorgeous looking cupcakes this weekend.
