This blog has gone to the dogs, no really it has. Just for today, my little fella Sir Pugsley is taking over.
Woof, treats!
I think it’s appropriate that the little guy gets his spotlight on his birthday right? Now everyone with me say, HAPPY BIRTHDAY SIR PUGSLEY!
I figured after 4 years, perhaps it was time to finally make some homemade dog treats. I make so many human ones that he’s not allowed to have, for his special day (and yes I really do celebrate my dogs birthday – I love my dog too much), it was time he got to enjoy my baking too!
Being new the world of dog treats, I came across this fantastic recipe on King Arthur Flour’s website, I was honestly looking for a good wholesome base to include his favorite treats and occasional special something (apple, carrots and bacon)
Bacon? Bacon? Did someone say Bacon?
Let me tell you, the aroma of these treats were insane, between the bacon and the peanut butter my poor dog was circling round for an hour while they baked and cooled. I don’t think he’s ever been tortured this much!
While I used tiny cookie cutters for one bite sized treats for him, feel free to used the appropriate size for your dog.
Oh and I learned one major thing while taking these photos. DO NOT and I mean DO NOT photograph dog treats at dog level. When I was finally ready for him to have his bite, that pile sitting there. Gone. Also, not possible to get my dog to pose when treats are sitting in front of him.
Birthday boy all tuckered out.
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup rolled oats, quick or regular
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup natural peanut butter
- 1/4 cup shredded carrots
- 1/4 cup shredded apple
- 2 slices cooked bacon crumbled
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon bacon grease
- 1/4 cup water
- Pre-heat your oven to 300 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper
- In a medium bowl mix together the flour, oats and salt.
- Add the peanut butter, carrots, apple and crumbled bacon next, mix well.
- Finally, mix in the egg, bacon fat and one tablespoon at a time the water until the dough comes together ( you may not need the full 1/4 cup).
- Pat the dough out on a clean surface to 1/4 inch thick and punch out with your cookie cutter. Reroll the scraps until all the biscuits are formed.
- Place on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 40 minutes until golden brown and crisp, you want them to be completely dry.
- Store in an airtight container or jar.
Happy Birthday Sir Puglsey from the Sous Pug and I – these look fantastic!
Thanks Aly and Sous Pug!
Happy happy birthday, Sir Pugsley! You’re such a loving momma, Susan – these treats are fantastic! I’ve always liked dogs but never wanted one of my own. Since getting my puppy, I’m constantly amazed by how much I love her. I was getting really emotional reading your post with a pet owner’s perspective. I’m glad Sir Pugsley enjoyed his treats. Thanks for sharing this recipe.
Nancy you are so sweet! That’s one of the things I love about dogs, they have such amazing personalities and really get you. Feeling down? Your pup knows and will do everything to cheer you up. Everyone needs a dog, if we did, we’d be living in a happier place.
I love your website. Its obvious you adore your little dog as I do mine. I love to share my food with my dog but I try hard not to. My vet has told me that if I must, the one food to absolutely avoid is pork. That is because it is the most fatty of all meats. He says dog digestive systems are not meant to handle fat or spices and end up with pancreatitis which is very painful. If severe enough it is fatal, no cure. Also, he said some dogs do eat table food all their lives and do not appear to suffer any harm but the majority do have problems. My Teddy adores bacon but I can only eat it if I don’t look in his eyes. The only solution is that I have is to cut my bacon consumption to a bare minimum. I suggest you ask your vets opinion. Thanks for your consideration.
Thank you for your comment Nora. As I mentioned in the post this was a one time special treat for Sir Pugsley. We keep him on a pretty strict diet and the only human food he gets are carrots, a tiny piece of apple and the occasional slice of banana. After that it’s dog treat jerky. 🙂 No chubby puggies in our house! While I’d never recommend bacon on a regular basis for any dog, I think in small amounts, and as an occasional treat once or twice year is okay for my guy. Everyone needs to decide what is best for their pet, the best part about this recipe is it can be customized to suit your dogs needs.
Happy birthday Sir Pugsley! From me and your future pug BFF, Weezer! I have to make these for Weeze, he can be kinda picky but I feel like the bacon will be right up his alley!
Thanks Stefanie & Weezer! I think Weezer will love these, the smell alone is going to make him crazy.
Happy birthday Sir Pugsley 🙂 Susan this is a great treat. I am sure my huskies will love it!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SIR PUGSLEY!!!

Hadley would like to wish Sir Pugsley a very happy birthday. She would also like to inquire if there are any more treats left in the jar and, if so, she would like to visit. 😉
Happy, happy birthday to Sir Pugsley from my own helper, Beso the Boxer. Your little guy deserves a treat now and then, and especially on his birthday. These sound delicious! Beso is extremely jealous.

I just came across this recipe – I can’t wait to try it for my Princess Sophie! And I as I looked through some of the post, I knew exactly how Nancy felt. I’d open a vein for Sophie, I love her so much – and never thought of myself as a dog person before she came into my life! She loves “cookies”, and I’ve been on the hunt for a good treat to try making at home. I think this may be the one! Thanks so much for sharing this!
Thank you so much for your kind comment! I hope your Princess Sophie loves these treats as much as my Sir Pugsley did! Dogs are so special and it’s really hard to understand the bond you create with them until you own one.
